Well, UI’s visitation weekend is in full swing. The facilities are impressive, but what’s impressed me most is the passion of the faculty for their work. It’s refreshing to be at a department full of young, vibrant faculty, and even the oldest faculty member there (Denmark) is excited about what the future holds. It’s a little scary that the students are tossing around sixty hours as a standard work week, but eh. If everyone else around you is doing it too, I imagine that dulls the pain. It also helps if your chemistry is cutting edge.
Apparently Illinois invented organic chemistry! Interesting, no? Corey started out there, and thought up retrosynthetic analysis in the Noyes Lab library. Talk about “standing on the shoulders of giants”…(a favorite buzzphrase around here)
